History of Sri Kurma Temple

Situated in Gara mandalam of Srikakulam, Sri Kurma temple is believed to have been built much before 2nd century. The actually builder of the temple is still unknown. However, this temple was developed during the time of Cholas and Kalinga Raja Dynasty. It is from 7th Century that this temple was recognised and from this time, the importance of this temple was known.

Later the temple was developed in various phases by the succeeding dynasties who ruled the place. Major construction was made during Kalinga, Andhra and Chola Dynasty's reign. The pillars called as 'Gandarva silpa sampada' and the entire architecture of the temple speaks the name and fame of these dynasties. The floor and the top around the temple, was built by Anangabheema, the successor of Gangaraja's dynasty.
